Advantage of marine band is that the radios are often fully waterproof.

If you just want the ability to use marine VHF, including Ch16 Distress/Aire Sea Rescue/Mountain rescue, the UV5r and its cousins can cover this AND Ham VHF/UHF AND PMR446 in a single unit costing less than £50

Marine Band is "line of sight" so would be not much use in land with buildings & hills.
