Only last week I reviewed an upgraded Baofeng, which for the same money as the Intek can do the following:""

Can you expand on that please me old radioologist ?

Hiya NR,

Sorry, I don't get what you mean. I listed tahte advantages in my reply: Walie Talkies like the UV5r cover more bands, ie have greater frequency range both on transmit and receive, and for the same money as the MT5050 can be upgraded with accessories taht will greatly increase operating time from the power pack, add a hand mike/speaker which is ultra useful when operating while portable with a fully loaded burgen, additional antennas to increase range and 12v power adaptors to allow the unit to operate directly from any 12v supply.

Ta muchly, I'm with you now, most of the frequencies appear to be HAM frequencies which is out in my book,so more frequencies is pointless if you need a ham licence to access them, I reiterate my original requirements for a SIMPLE , UNLICENCED,CHANNEL DISPLAY NOT FREQUENCIES, STAND ALONE ( no repeaters ) theres only the PMR 446 channels of use, I wonder if it displays the PMR 446 frequencies as channels or frequencies? Smile
He He He, I'm going to need to have a drink of whiskey before long, I dont honestly know why I cannot explain myself in clear terms that the techno experts can grasp.

HAND HELD RADIO
4 watts minimum
UNLICENCED
Display in CHANNELS not frequencies
Does not need modifying by any more than cutting a link wire to get full power
BNC antenna fitting
Uses AA batteries
NO reprogramming
NO connecting to a computer
Does NOT use repeaters
10 mile line of sight range

Simple, concise, something any new prepper can unpack from its box after TSHTF and use straight away. !!!

99.99 % of preppers see a radio as a tool nothing more they are not interested in upgrades, repeaters, fancy antenna, licences, side bands, UHV versus VHF,repeaters etc. So it is fair to say there is NO suitable radio equipment at this time to meet our very simple needs
Yup in comparison the UV5-R is a better, indeed much better piece of kit than the Intek, sadly neither appear suitable for anyone except commited hobbyists.

OK I'll try my best

HAND HELD RADIO YES UV5R is handheld

4 watts minimum YES UV5R is handheld

UNLICENCED 4w Unlicensed=CB, no other choice

Display in CHANNELS not frequencies YES UV5R Displays Channels or frequencied, whichever you want

Does not need modifying by any more than cutting a link wire to get full power UV5R does not need modding IN ANY WAY to get full power

BNC antenna fitting UV5r uses SMC for which there are many antennas, or a 2 quid adaptor to BNC

Uses AA batteries Yes UV5r can use AA batteries, but standard Lithium Ion Power pack is far more powerful

NO reprogramming Yes and no UV5r has al frequencies available but for ease and speed of operation requires programming....get one with a programming cable and I'll send you the programming for free by e-mail

NO connecting to a computer UV5r can be set up from its key pad

Does NOT use repeaters COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT...what have repeaters gor to do with anything? Its not the radio that uses repeaters its the operator who chooses 9 or not) to use repeaters. Post SHTF I will not be relying on existing repeaters for my coms.

10 mile line of sight range Yes UV5r will give you 10 miles LOS

NO, THE UV5R IS SUITABLE FOR COMMITED SURVIVALISTS WHO WANT GOOD QUALITY, GOOD VALUE SOLUTIONS THAT GIVE OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE FROM CURRENT TECHNOLOGY, BECAUSE THESE RADIOS HAVE FAR GREATER FREQUEBNCY RANGE THAN TRADITIONAL HAM RADIO EQUIPMENT. PERSONALLY SPEAKING, UV5R TYPE RADIOS ARE THE PERFECT HANDHELD EMERGENCY RADIO FOR ME, BECAUSE THEY THE COVERS BROADCAST BAND, MARINE BAND, 2M BAND, UHF BAND AND PMR446 AND CAN REMAIN ON STATION FOR APPROX 7 DAYS BEFORE BEING RECHARGED[/b]
