RE: Do you REALLY need that ham license?
I received my Foundation and Intermediate licence last year, and took the Advanced exam just last week. To anyone thinking of buying amateur radio equipment I would recommend getting at least the Foundation licence. It is VERY easy, and legitimises your use (TX) of the equipment and introduces you to an interesting bunch of people. Most towns have amateur radio clubs which will host the exam.

Licence conditions are here:
http://licensing.ofcom.org.uk/binaries/s...ence07.pdf

There are rules, no 'broadcast' except when looking for contacts, can't be used for politics, commercial use, need to give your callsign every 15 mins and when changing frequency, need to respect power and frequency allocations, can't operate from the air... all very reasonable so yeah, you can just have a chat. Smile

RE: Do you REALLY need that ham license?
Hi my first posting (be gentle lol) i'm not sure about all this at all. I mean regulations and law go out the window in extreme situations right ? cant understand all this talk about callsigns and such, the average radio ham will have no power, food reserves or much else, not part of the eqaution for long i would imagine. Offcom are hardly going to be breaking your door down either, like they all be at home with family if they can get home. I have a 2mtr transceiver, 2 c.b, 3 pmr, 1 multiband receiver and a fm broadcast transmitter, fm broadcast ? yes the fm band you listen to your local radio on, when my local station goes down i will be broadcasting to the community. Communication is half the battle in a disaster situation, anoracks however should remain in the wardrobe.
Return to old watering holes for more than water; friends and dreams are there to meet you.
