RE: We cant feed ourselfs
I think the guy's comment in th article ("Supermarkets are driven by what consumers want, and they want cheap food.") is an over-simplification. We're having cheap food rammed down our throats as the big supermarkets reel from years of over-investment in store-space and scramble for market share. Having only a few massive retailers being able to dictate to the many small farmers is a distortion of the market, and represents a failure of free market economics (of which I'm normally a big fan).

Farmers would benefit from clubbing together into marketing groups more. Mey Selections, an initiative by Prine Charles in Northern Scotland is a case in point.
Find a resilient place and way to live, then sit back and watch a momentous period in history unfold.

Britain will soon be "digging for victory" all over again and not by choice but by necessity .... same as last time, our farmers are in between a rock and a hard place Brussels and super markets dictating how they run their business ...add the government controls on minimum wage rates in to the mix and to top off with austerity measures , its no bloody wonder farmers are getting out altogether , never mind the weathers unpredictable , as said in the article countries are not exporting their produce they need it for themselves the outcome of that is price spike, whom ever is prepared to pay the highest price rules the markets, why do you think Barclays set up a company in commodities....that company bought millions of tons of WHEAT .....futures ....hedging, my arse ....as survivalists we need to start Right Now with our preparations on growing our food and rearing animals ...can anyone honestly think things will get better as time goes buy....NO nor do i

It is exactly the opposite. People have the option of buying direct and more and more are. More and more are growing their own and keeping their own livestock.

Back when supermarkets started this push for low priced food it was what we wanted. We buy battery reared chickens for cheap meat ignoring the free range options. Supermarkets responded.

The idea we are in a free market though is incorrect. The government has a finger in every pie and where their fingers are is waste and corruption. We have never been a free market in the UK. Just look at the differences between the US and us and you can see what a free market was doing.

Learning to grow food is an essential skill, but even if you have no land you can still learn it.

There are thousands of edible plants that most people wouldn't recognize, you can find them on the Plants For A Future database (http://www.pfaf.org/) . Planting a few of these in hedgerows or empty spaces ( like underneath pylons, grass verges or corners of fields where tractors can't get for example ) gives you a useful emergency stash. If you find a fenced woodland the sunny South edge just inside the fence is a good place, although you might need some chicken wire to keep the rabbits off.

Those guys should get their facts straight!

1968 is not a benchmark date by any means.

GB has not been self sufficient in food production for over 100 years even with the lower population of that time.

During WW2 every square inch of land was under cultivation and the nation was still dependent on imports.

All this codswallop really ticks me off! Nope, we haven't been self sufficient in food in the UK for ages, however.... that does not mean we cannot all put up a dammed good fight at making ourselves as self sufficient as possible. Even a decent supply of fresh vegetables, perhaps chickens and eggs, and even rabbits if you are that way inclined will make a real difference both to family budgets and personal health. We do not have to go along with the BS politics, and we do not have to buy crappy food!

Go preppers!
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
