I think you will find people split into two camps.

Those that will passively accept whatever comes their way
Those that will do something.

Just by being here you fall into the second catagory.

That second catagory splits into those that are

Aggressive and willing to kill or maim another human being if they feel like it. (I hope none of us are in here.)
Aggressive and willing to kill or maim another human being if they are forced to. (Most of us are in here.)
Those that are not aggressive or willing to kill or maim. (Some of us are in here.)

The government is trying to clamp down on our aggressive instincts by penalising us for any retaliatory action, by limiting our ability to retaliate and by making us all namby pamby turn the other cheek wimps. Genetics though will win out but at a cost.

So the aggressive among us will be willing to take that step. Those that are prepared and have thought about it. There may be hesitation but they will pull the trigger to defend themselves and theirs.

If you do hesitate because of your upbringing or you try and avoid conflict when it is apparent it is inevitable you may die or be severely injured. If you don't you have the opportunity to become aggressive. Some of us won't make it past here. Don't let it be you.

Also be aware of others views on this. You don't want someone who won't kill being your sentry. By the time someone who is gets there the bad guy will be in.
