anyway getting back on topic, the only down side to the Whitby area is the lack of canals that you get further South into Yorkshire. The Canal network is vast and can be accessed from most West and South Yorkshire towns and cities. I'm not sure how long the Canal network would continue to function after any serious breakdown as they are very reliant on servicing the Lock gates and mechanism's.
