PSK31 on Boafeng UV-5R
A couple of the guys at my club have been experimenting with PSK31 data mode on 2 metres VHF using a Boafeng UV-5R radio hooked up to iphone or android phones running a PSK31 app (costs about £2 to £3 on app store). The interface costs about £20 but could easily be made by anyone who has reasonable electronics skills for just a few quid.

The results have been very impressive. Good contact and conversations over considerable distance, when there was no contact possible or heard using voice.

This is an extremely portable comms set up that gives good range and readabilty over much greater distances than would be possible by voice. It also gives a quite secure means of communicating without casual users listening in, all they would hear would be data warbles, similar to a fax machine. Anyone wanting to listen in would need to have appropriate kit, i.e. 2m receiver, linked to a device running PSK31 and they'd need to have a good idea which frequency you were operating on.

This could be really good for OpSec intergroup communications over longer distances than possible with voice. Without spending a great deal of money

Thank you - the link was to the one I bought, which is probably why the link had disappeared Smile
