couple years ago I broke my ankle, went to the ER and after waiting 3 hours they did exactly as the article states: took x-ray and referred me to a specialist. wouldn't even give me some good pain meds. So when I saw the specialist he said if I had immediately put ice on it instead of going to the ER, I could have cut the recovery time in half because the inflammation (swelling) does additional damage to the area.
