Who is in your Perfect Group?
We all know that different military units have the same basic requirements. Each person needs a set basic skill set. Then each unit has various specialist capabilities. Then there are secondary skills, etc.

If you are working in a group, what kind of people would you want to be working with, aside from trust worthy and all that?

Think about the skills they'd bring to the play. People like a butcher, a carpenter, an electrician, fireman, policeman, accountant, salesman, politician, plumber, gardener, radio enthusiast, etc.

Pick your ideal group size then work the skill sets around what you think would be an optimised group.

Skill set is secondary to dedication to the group effort, compatibility and personality.

The most accomplished person in the world is of no use if they fall asleep on guard duty.

In the modern world people tend to pigeon holed, and associated with their jobs/trades, I'm of the opinion like some previous posts that see people as more adaptable than we sometimes give credit for. The importance we give to certain professions is sometimes skewed by the way they are portrayed in our media etc.
We are constantly reminded that Doctors for instance are essential to our way of life, yet if you analyse how a civilisation actually works, then you would be surprised to learn that the most important people are in fact Dustbin men/sewer workers etc. Civilisation will collapse faster without refuse collectors than it would without Doctors/lawyers/police.

Yep, you might want someone with medical training, but do you want Doc Martin?

You might want a "survival expert", but do you want the likes of Bear G around?

And if there is a lawyer on board I hope his hobby is growing a veggie patch, reloading his own shells and shooting red deer.

I would be looking for the mid-wife that can also cook up a tasty mouse and maggot w/noodles meal and still has the fortitude to pick up a shotgun if needed, and even the little kid that knows where all the hens hide to lay their eggs. I might even take in a corporate executive if he plays guitar well and spins a good tale when evening comes.

As an example, the US Special Forces primary operating element is a unit called an A-team.

2 officers
2 intel men
2 com men
2 heavy weapons men
2 light weapons men
2 medical specialists

Each person is cross trained in two other fields to the same level as the specialists.

That allows the team to be broken into two five man units still having all the needed skills to complete any mission. Theory is that even if only two men survive it is possible they will have all the skills at their disposal.

I am not saying your group should be patterned after an A-team, just that a jack of all trades with a good personality and quick wit would be a most valuable member of any group.

the only "A team" we ever saw in the UK was a TV show headed by George Peppard...and I wouldn't give any of that "team" a job washing dishes let alone access to a fire arm !!!Big Grin

I have my 'dirty dozen' Four families, four men, women and children. We have all known each other for at least 17 years and some of us a lot longer. Between us we have builder, plumber, carpenter, electrician, nurse, teacher, farmer, chef, security, comms. All four men, two women and two teenagers are also familiar with some kind of firearm (air rifle and shotgun) The thing that brings us together is that we are all outdoorsmen (and women) and can (and have) worked under pressure together and we still get on. Not quite the A Team but I'll stick with them and know they have my back.
