You may get lucky whilst travelling upstream and source a boat , as has been said earlier in the post binoculars are crucial , see before your seen , I feel a bicycle would work in the earliest stages before people/gangs/militia get organised but I worry about travelling to quickly and not observing enough, you can't afford to be caught/compromised once cos if you lose your kit the job inhand will take on massive proportions.
