It's all getting a bit scary out there.......
It's getting to the point where I am reluctant to open a newspaper in case the global news has got any worse.

When I started to think about becoming a "prepper" I had a very sketchy idea of the sort of things I was going to concern myself with and try to plan ahead for, but now it would appear that a large number of those things are starting to appear out of the woodwork. We have Russia and Ukraine nose to nose and the EU and US sticking their oars in, not to mention veiled threats of the whole situation going nuclear; IS in the Middle East becoming a right pain in the butt, not to mention the possibility of all the little jihadis returning home to wreak havoc in this country; migrants in Calais causing problems for the French; potential power outtages this winter due to unplanned plant shutdowns; flooding; terrorism in general, and of course Parliament in disarray (so what's new!).

So, at what point do perceived threats become actual? I can see that all of the above have the potential to cause a lot of problems for this country, but honestly, what does one do? I have stocked up on candles and various modes of lighting; my larder is looking full; we now have a logburner (just in case), and with an open fire we at least have the potential for heating and cooking; the garden has produced magnificently and in on course to keep up supplied this winter..... I could burble on, but there just seems to be something missing from my plans. I know what it is - I have no control over any event that could wreak havoc and it's driving me mad. I can see all these horrible problems, but don't have enough information to plan for them.

I can feel an aaarghhh moment coming on.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

Mary you are correct you don't have any control over global events, but you do have control over your own life, so focus on insulating yourself as much as sensibly possible from the direct implications of the global events.

Be as self reliant, self sufficient, self secure and off-grid as you can, for every step you take in securing yourself and your family you reduce the risk to yourself from the global events.

Stores of food, fuel etc increases your independence and self reliance and reduces the threats that you have no control over
Growing some of your own food
Learning skills and how to fix / make things
An extensive medical kit and training reduces your reliance on the NHS
Shopping online and not going into the city centre reduces the risk from disease or terror attacks
Not using public transport gives you control over your safety in public
Learning self defence / shooting / archery reduces the likelihood of you becoming a victim.

Being aware of current events and global issues is a PLUS because you unlike millions of sheeple are at least AWARE of the possible threats / shortages etc and you can do something in advance to mitigate the threats.

If you can see the hordes gathering on the horizon then at least you can get out of the way.

Just be happy that you made a decision to prepare and are thus in a better position than many others.

Look at what you can do to increase your preps now you see it as a higher priority than before.

I think the yanks sum it up well on one of their forums

IF POSSIBLE aim to
get rid of the mortgage ASAP
Pay off your credit cards and cut em up
Pay any outstanding taxes
Grow, store and preserve as much of your own food as you can
Get yourself a water storage system (and filter I assume)
Get and maintain a good quality vehicle and store extra treated fuel
Get an off grid power supply or a back up power supply
Get a wood / multi fuel stove / range
Get some medical training and have an extensive medical / FA / Dental kit
Learn as many useful skills as you can
Build a library of " How To" books
Sort out your own home and personal security, don't rely on the cops

etc etc yadda yadda basically try and make yourself as unreliant on the state and society as possible.

I fully understand your feelings Mary. It's natural to be worried. That's why we're all here.

If there's something that you feel you have forgotten, then welcome to normal life. We all miss some things. That's one of the reason so many people work in groups. It makes the prepping process smoother and people are then able to be more specialist in their area of expertise.
