Deep in the archives I also have casting calls for shows wanting people to live in caves, homestead on a houseboat, set up a survival community inside an abandoned inner city tenement while growing crops on the roof, mine gold in the Yukon and Alaska, run a trap line in Alaska and repopulate a ghost town in the American west.

We also have shows about making illegal/untaxed liquor, making and selling drugs and outlaw motorcycle gangs.

All the latter are illegal and completely staged.

As for leaving one's children out in the cold and various other activities??? That is child abuse and illegal in all parts of the US.

Most states even have laws preventing minor children from living in a structure that has no electricity or running water.

If these activities were really taking place the subjects would be arrested, the film used in trial to convict them for negligence or abuse and they would get several years in prison, while the children were placed in protective care.

The children would not even have to file the charges, the state would move against them independently.

It has only been in the past couple of years that "home schooling" in most of the states in the US was legalized and it is still illegal in several states.

Texas has some very strict and specific laws on these matters which were the ignition of the Branch Dividian fiasco back in the 1990s.

One simply is not legally allowed to do most of what is presented in these "reality shows".
