Careful when storing firewood

Just read about a family in co durham ago bought an old Victorian house 15 years ago and spent a fortune making those home modern but Self Sufficient.

Wood burning stoves, wood and coal powered AGA etc, Solar panels etc.

The problem arose from their habit of keeping a tidy pile of logs for the wood burner indoors in the winter, some of the logs were infested with wood worms beetles which moved from the log pile to the floors, stairs and even the roof joists. Its going to cost them £60K to repit all the rotten wood out, reroof, floors, stairs and treat the rest. So be careful where you store your wood.

This is an issue we have to deal with all the time.

We season and store chopped firewood in an outdoor woodstore, but find it really needs to come indoors a few days before being burned, so as to get the moisture content down to lowest poss level. This is especially the case in spring and autumn which can be damp around here. From time to time, while in the warm beasties emerge.

To control infestations, all woodwork around the indoor storage area has been thoroughly treated with wood worm /rot solution, and the firewood itself is stored on long seed trays in an attempt to catch debris and hitch-hikers.

When I lived in New Hampshire stove wood was kept in an attached garage under the kitchen, and brought upstairs daily via a hand winch-operated elevator or "dumb waiter." Wood was stacked on the concrete floor and against the back wall. The wood storage area was heavily laced with mothballs which kept the bugs at bay. Seemed to work well.

It's just commonsense really, isn't it. We store our firewood in a field barn well away from the house and bring it in as we need it. We had a bit of a problem last year when we had a large willow trimmed back. Did you know that wasps LOVE willow sap? I didn't, until we disturbed masses of the little beasties sipping away. It was a bit of a shock. Luckily, as soon as the sap dried out in the sunshine the wasps pushed off.
