I was pondering this only the other day. As the writer said, listening is more important than transmitting. More important than the 2:1 ratio quoted I think.

Radio is a good for information gathering if the power is out. An FM radio will pick up the local commercial broadcasters. An AM / LW radio will pick up national broadcasts. A Shortwave ( SW) radio will pick up international broadcasts. As the writer of the article said, its interesting to compare how news stories are presented in different countries...indeed it highlights that the BBC's reporting is not always unbiased.

Something like this would be a good starting point. It includes AM/FM/SW radio, torch. It has a hand crank power generator so is not grid tied.
