I don't think there is a single example anywhere of a collapse where money ceased to exist, but there are numerous ones where other tradeable items became easier to trade.

What happens is the cost of living rises so that it is too high for many people, and if you can't afford the cost of living you die ... but there still is money.

I'm talking about a major societal collapse not just some economic downturn.

For the last century, we've lived in a world where economic growth was the norm. As a result, it is very difficult to understands what it will be like when economic recession is the norm. But we are about to find out.
