Taking a weapon when you bug out?
Bugging Out on foot?
Ever considered how much weight you'll be carrying on top of your BOB? Here's a few "Approximate weight" examples for you.

Rifles?
L129A1 (Sharpshooter), 20 rounds = 5kg
7.62 x 55 mm 100 rounds= 3.4 Kgs
Total 8.4 kg

SA80 A2 + SUSAT full mag 30 rounds = 5 kg
5.56 x 45 mm 100 rounds= 1.6 Kgs
Total 6.6 kg

M4 with a full mag 30 rounds = 3.1 kgs
5.56 x 45 mm 100 rounds= 1.6 Kgs
Total 4.7kg

Hows about an air rifle?
Heavy HW35 Spring-piston air rifle = 4 kgs
500 (20gn) .22 pellets = 0.7 kg(ish)
Total 4.7kg

Standard Type 9mm Pistol?
Sig 228 full mag 13 rounds = 0.8(ish)kg
9.00 x 19 mm 100 rounds= 1.9 kgs
Total 2.7kg

What about a little air pistol?
Crossman 1377 (Pnumatic) 1 kg(ish)
500 .177 (4.5gn) pellets = 0.2 kg(ish)
Total 1.2kg

HW35 .22 spring piston pistol 1.1 kg
500 (20gn) .22 pellets = 0.7 kg(ish)
Total 1.8 kg

Or, if you'd rather take a bow?
Average re-curve bow = 1.2 kg
20 field Arrows (230gr) = 0.3 kg(ish)
Total 1.5kg

A crossbow?
Excaliber 175lb XBow = 2.6(ish) kg
20 Bolts = 0.45 kg
Total 3kg

Slingshot?
My generic Powershot + spare band = 0.140kg
100 3/8 steel shot = .35kg
Total 0.5kg

Machete / Kukri?
Total 0.8-1.0 kg

Anyone's back aching yet?Confused

Flipping good post, Kudos to you Paul that should get our community thinking a bit ( esp if they have busted their backs like moi)
My on foot bugging out kit would prolly involve a Compound Bow, 25 arrows, quiver, A pistol or carbine crossbow 20 bolts ( modified to Nemesis Spec) and my knife. Plus binos or spotting scope.

Wife and child both carrying compound bows, 25 arrows, quiver and large lock knives.

I blooming well would, It may not be exposed or openly carried to begin with but I would not Bug Out if TSHTF without the defensive / security element of my kit.Smile

i dont know if you would want to bug out(esp. from a city) and HAVING to fire a gun at someone...this would give your position/area away, maybe better to carry a rifle in a gun slip or on a sling and use a bow and arrows to clear the way...much quieter.
Some people that prefer to be alone arent anti-social they just have no time for drama, stupidity and false people.

Darn it! Blush
Forgot the shot gunners amongst us.
Sorry guys and girls.
So, Basic Remington pump or a 'standard' over/under = 3.6 kg (ish)
100 average weighted 12g shotgun shells = 3 kg
Total 6.6 kg
