Fire Piston

I played with one at the Wilderness gathering the other year. It works by generating heat through the compression of air. It creates a small ember, a bit like you'd get from using a bow-drill. The ones I saw were machined out of steel. I'd rather use a fire-steel, tbh.
Find a resilient place and way to live, then sit back and watch a momentous period in history unfold.

One word, Ferrocerium.
aka Firesteel, Blastmatch, and Metal-Match. Works everywhere, usually everytime, and lasts a long, long time. No moving parts and cheap (£3 upwards). You'll need char cloth or amadou fungus for tinder in a fire piston. It's got moving parts, and it doesn't like getting wet. IMO always K.I.S.S. (Keep it stupidly simple).
