RE: dose prison work ???
Due to demands for "tougher punishment and longer sentences" to show we mean business, the U.S. now has 14% of its population in prison.
Combine that with the 14% actual unemployment figures and you wind up with minimum of 1/4 your people sitting idle.
Going into the system is a rite of passage in some families. a young man is not considered an adult until he has "done time".
No, prison does not work. Apparently it has never worked.
But what did work; hard labor, deportation, selling into slavery, branding, mutilation?
None of those things worked any better than incarceration.
Our "Society" as a whole can not admit the obvious. There is evil in the world and it rests in the hearts of men.
We try to hide it away, train it away and rehabilitate it and we are continually amazed that none of those things works.
As a historian I feel the best system, used right up to the advent of steam power, was chaining them to an oar in a galley. Second best was conscripting them into the Army or Navy and using them as cannon fodder, or in the present situation, to clear IED devices and car bombs.
Many of my squaddies were there because a judge sent them there, and that was in the 1970s. Amazingly, many of them thrived under the discipline and training, made good soldiers, survived their war experience and became productive citizens.
That might not be the answer in every case. Just one option out of many, all of which have largely failed due to man's evil nature.

RE: dose prison work ???
might have worked back in the 70s, but it wont work with the current generation, they think the world owes them a living...and a high paid one at that, and when the realisation hits that you don't get it without a lot of hard work they are resentful, don't forget this is the same people who look up to all these so called "celebrities"!
Some people that prefer to be alone arent anti-social they just have no time for drama, stupidity and false people.

RE: dose prison work ???
Right, nice of everyone to call criminals all kinds of anything, but the simple fact is anyone that is posting here and would say they never committed a crime is talking absolute shite.
As for prison, what is it for? If it is to remove people from society for a period of time then yeah, it works at that. If it is for rehabilitating people, it works for some, not for all.
You want no or as little crime as possible - remove the opportunity for crime to be committed. The major driving factor behind crime is not poverty, or drugs or a feeling that society thinks you will become a criminal anyway. It is because the opportunity exist for crimes to be committed and whilst criminals may or may not think they will get away with it, they can be fairly sure they will be successful in committing the crime. It is because they are taking nothing but a short term view.
Now, if you were a criminal or potential criminal and everyday citizens were likely to be armed - you are not going to be successful or your odds of being are greatly reduced. You do not commit crime.
If the things that tempt you are locked away once not in use, they are not their to tempt you.
As SD has said, a blanket sentence of getting killed when captured would just make criminal kill more.

RE: dose prison work ???
i think sticking them in the army is a very good idea , if the crimes not to bad and if they keep their nose clean for 5yrs the crime is wiped.
i also think a lot of these hoodie types if taken away from dump estates and given good role models ie sgt major ass kicker many would change their ways for good .

You got it bad don't you Road Warrior!
911 actually WAS a terrorist attack.
No such bill ever passed. If it did there would be 450+ congressmen responsible and not just our president.
The public knows what a school looks like and what concentration camps look like. 800 concentration camps would be obvious.
and FEMA camps are an internet myth. The last place I saw on the net, presented as a FEMA camp near my location, turned out to be a frozen pizza factory.

RE: dose prison work ???
I don't believe prison works for all, but it must work for some. I would love to see the death penalty reintroduced for certain crimes (not necessarily for murder as I believe it should depend on the circumstances) for example I would like England to introduce something along the lines of Castle law, where if an intruder breaks into your house they forfeit any right to leniency and can be legally shot.
Certainly sex crimes, paedophiles ,terrorists, animal cruelty and murder where it can't be justified, should all be strung up after conviction. It would save the country millions on having to house these people.Spending thousands every week on keeping this type of person alive truly baffles me.
If the shtf and these people were reintroduced to the population a lot of them would see it as xmas with a free reign to do whatever they like. It'll be dangerous enough just trying to survive with the starving masses trying to get what you've got.

RE: dose prison work ???
A soft civilised penal system is like socialism, it simply does not work because it has no deterant value.
