River, why does it have to be a community or commune? why not simply ones own family?

I guess that if I wanted to take a cheap shot I would call you a 'born again cynic' Heart or that we don't have to emulate them. In one of my more serious philosophical turns I might argue that although the public's "humanity" doesn't seem to be there, the 'image' is not lost, as scarred and as marred as it may be. (I guess a theologian might call it the imageo deo but that would open up yet another can of worms WinkWink)

It's my insistence on the dignity of man that would drive me to all i can.

Quote:......., it's down to SURVIVAL! Interfering in other's business WILL affect your SURVIVAL.

This is called SURVIVAL UK isn't it? Are we not all prepping to survive??

If it is ONLY about survival then kill every f.....r on sight. But in my mind Survival UK is not just about Personal survival. It's broader than that

Quote:If doing whatever I can to protect me and mine (and that includes letting the population do whatever they want to each other) gets me the badge of being similar to a Nazi then I shall wear, and wear it proudly too.

Then shame on you. This view makes people no better than the Montana wild men.

Morals aside, feeding your neighbour may be a more pragmatic solution than shooting him. You have the potential to build emotional capital and a sense of obligation. There are benefits to operating in groups; sharing of labour, mounting round the clock watches, strength in numbers, diversity of skills.

When building a community, someone has to make the first move. I have no control over whether another person does this, but I do have control over whether it's me.

That said, I do agree with the point about looking after self and family first. First be independent, then you can reach out and be interdependent. It's when a community tries to build itself on mutual dependency that the problems can start. Like building a house on loose sand.
Find a resilient place and way to live, then sit back and watch a momentous period in history unfold.

River if you want to be a communist or socialist and reach out to your fellow man then so be it, its your right and your choice, but you dont have the right to force your morals or beliefs onto others. For me the mass demise of most of modern society would be a blessing. I would seek only to help, nuture and support those with similar values as myself.

Modern British society offers only misery, crime, taxation and repression and I know many like myself would like to see it scrapped.

NR - That really isn't fair. My politics are just to the right of Ghengis Khan so I amnow a communist or socialist. Neither am I forcing my view on any others. I am simply entering into the debate where most people here are individualist libertarians. That's fine but remember that there ARE other views apart from 'the usual suspects'.

sorry that should read ..... so I am not a communist or socialist ....

RE: Surviving? Is it worth it.
At the end of the day, no-one is wrong, we each have our own thoughts on how we would behave after an event.

Most of us agree that family /group must come first, and in those early days I am sure that almost all of us will be doing that.

...but no matter what we say, there will come a time when things settle down, and life becomes more normal,.. [ what ever that may be ],... if we are the kind of people who are willing to help other now, then we will become that person again, that's in our make up, this is why we help people now

So if the rape is happening two days after a complete social unrest, and lives are at risk then there is justification for walking away and looking after our own,... but if it is six months down the line and the same thing happens, then the person we are now will come to the fore,... weither that woman gets help, is down to us as individuals
A major part of survival is invisibility.

Post Collapse and I mean A LONG way down the line-not months but years-then people MAY come together to form communities AKA VILLAGES, but this will be when things have settled down and it is safe to associate with other people, this also depends on how many people have actually survived the original event that caused the collapse in the first place. but not everyone may wish to do so, if we have survived this long maybe we have no need for such things, maybe we have evolved to be more self sufficient?
Some people that prefer to be alone arent anti-social they just have no time for drama, stupidity and false people.

Great debate peoploids!

My penny's worth is that most of us don't know what we will do as each scenario will be unique unto itself. Our ability to quickly suss any situation will be in direct proportion to our actions. However, emotions will be paramount and act as the "wild card".[Image: confused.gif]

At the end of the day, how we handle situations with others in distress will define who we are. I suspect that some who think they'll react in one direction will find themselves doing the exact opposite. Some who do follow their beliefs will reflect heavily after any such event and they will change, whether they realise it or not, such is the power of consciousness. Rolleyes
