Whilst I think that anything other than guns is sub-optimal for home defense, If I had to pick someting, I would pick a short stabbing spear. Ideally it would be stored hung up on the wall as a display peice, maybe as a pair with some sort of mask/shield. That way If I answered a bump in the night, I could say I was scared and grabbed the closest thing to hand, which is better from a legal standpoint. You can also use it to keep a distance from the invader, ie on a staircase.

To be fair mate, you don't want anything that could need space to manoeuvre if you have the possibility to be caught in a tight space, e.g. doorframe or stairwell. That's one of the reasons I got my wife a small machete for her Birthday (who ever said romance is dead?). It's incase she's 'gardening' in a tight enclosed area but still wants to be able to get a good powerful swing.

What can I say, she really was shocked. Gave her some awesome other stuff too. Like a metal pen shaped just so that it fits into a fist and can be used to mash up muscle fibres and break bone. I did say I am quite the romantic haha.

I did think about reloading shotgun but the press and gear are quite expensive not to mention big compared to some centre fire gear....i want to have 2000 00 buck and 2000 no5 shot...£1100 at today's prices , thats about double what a shotgun reloading kit appears to cost without any compononents....not got the space or the time so i'm just going to buy my stock.

my favorite non-gun weapon is a 24" section of stainless-steel pipe that I have wrapped one end with electrical tape as a handle.

I buy the shotgun cartridges I need generally. The reloading gear is for special stuff. I don't want toomuch of that and it would be cheaper to buy it but I can't.

Sand knuckled gloves are ideal...to be worn while wielding a hand weapon. That way your last line of defence packs a much harder punch!!! Not sure what SAP gloves are though. But biker gloves with reinforced knuckles are ideal too.
