Totally agree with you BP and anyone that tries to compare it with bugging out or a UK situation, just isn't getting it
It's no different to Ray Mears being in the Canadian Rockies, nothing to do with the UK, but still good value and entertaining TV

Er..you forgot the Spot Satellite Messengers they had strapped to their belts!
I thought it was good fun. I enjoyed the group dynamics. Loved the ex-cop when they just landed; "Right, single file!"
(Re. fire; personally I would have borrowed one of the camera batteries and created a spark from that so we could all move on and catch some lunch. One of Bear's competitors in the "survivor porn" business (Survivorman) did that in his series!)

RE: The Island with BG
Good point, but they are probably just some kind of GPS trackers so the producers know where they are on the island, so they are not really going to help them in what they are doing.
But yes the ex-cop, he is going to wind a few of them up pretty quickly!
It would be interesting to know just how alone these guys are, as for example the batteries in the cameras and their personal microphones will need to be changed everyday. So is there a production crew situated somewhere just off camera, or do they get a daily delivery to swap over the batteries?

I suspect there is a production crew lurking just out of camera shot making sure things don't get completely out of hand.

What, "Lord of the Flies" style?! I wonder which one would end up as "piggy".

RE: The Island with BG
HAHA, just watched that! 12 hours to start a fire in those conditions with those supplies....not likely. There are 12 hours of sun in a day, according to what he said. My experiences with the South Pacific would probably say that was pretty accurate. Numerically that doesn't work though. They tried a little in the night, then again in the day, probably around late morning to early afternoon. So from a start to finish, it might have been 12 hours time, but as a constant 12 hours of effort.....no chance!
As for their route of what to do...oops.
Personally I go with the Native American view, which has always seemed to make the most sense: Shelter, Water, Fire, Food.
With that order, water and fire are VERY closely linked. Fire is used to purify the water, but you need water in the first place before you can have a fire. Can't do it the other way round. Your shortest walk might be 12 miles from water to fire, if you start the fire first. So that's why, for these 2 elements, it's water first and fire second.
Tarrel, I would tend to agree about use of a battery. However, I think I'd rather just learn to use a bowdrill properly before hand haha.

RE: The Island with BG
It was a programme about a load of chaps who really would have been better off down the pub trying to "survive" on an island. Yawn. My cat could have done a better job.
Do you think it would have been cheating if, knowing you were going to do this programme, you did a bit of basic research? I found myself hissing at the screen - "Did you know you can eat coconut palm hearts", or "try hermit crabs".... oh dear.

Mary I was the same "put a t-shirt over the water bottle as a basic filter" "they're contaminating everything with the dirty, untreated water" & "why doesn't 1 of them try using the glass bottle as a lense to make fire".

RE: The Island with BG
With you both. I was wondering why none of them added the extra heat from the lenses of the gay guy's glasses to help create an ember.
There are so many mistakes!
To stay cool, get your clothing wet and use it to wick the heat from your body. None of them said "Wait a minute guys...here's a plan, wet clothing will keep us cooler. Now we just need some water....hey look, an ocean!" What's more annoying, none of them seem to recognise that going into the sea, near naked, in scolding hot temperatures, without sunscreen, is going to get them burned.
Next episode will be all about catching food, because as BG said at the end of the episode, When you're hungry, that hunger becomes an all consuming desire/need/demand. After that, they'll probably end up needing a shelter of some kind. One of them will figure out there are benefits to a shelter. Then it'll become an oversized build and they'll hardly adventure into the rest of the island.
