I think I need to better explain 'skylight'. It's not like a normal skylight in most houses. This is a whole in a flat roof, with a mini-green house type concrete and glass structure on it. I'll be smashing one of those windows out then replacing it with an openable window. I'll still need a ladder to be able to escape through there still.

Can you not leave it in place but secure a hatchet or prybar next to it to allow you to smash it out in a hurry, BTW dont forget a set of steps to easily reach it.

Roll back the carpet and check the floor boards, are they nailed down or are they screwed?
If they're nailed then prise a couple up , fill the space, being carefull not to cache any food stuffs near hot water pipes and then re-srew the boards back in place,

Thank you PF.

I've got my machete and air rifle near enough to my door. I'm possibly changing rooms to get better access to the roof. I want to build a small cache or 2 up there. Something subtle, but worthwhile. Also want to check it's suitability for a look out incase of riots and other civil unrest.

I might have to build an urban ghillie suit, because there's a tower block/block of flats, close by. So if everything kicks off, I want to be able to remain hidden for a while.

I've just been up on the roof of my new place. Easy access if I take the larger back room. It's good, because there are LOADS of roofs up there. So moving from one to another is easy enough. The problem is that access comes both ways.

Making a couple of caches up there will be easy enough. So that's a good thing.

As a look out point, it seems to be okay. It's a small step up to see over the wall down to the streets below. But that can be easily sorted with a small box or something. You know when you're a kid and you need to rest your body on a wall to see over the top. It's that kind of height for me.

RE: My New Apartment/Flat
Okay everyone, a quick update on my new place.....I'm changing rooms at the end of the month. Oh yes, I kid you not. I'm getting the bigger room! You all know what that means......false wall time! RJ, I'm looking at you mate.

Another thing, I have much easier access to the roof as well! A small ladder, and I'm up there.

So, it looks like a better option right? Yes and no. It provides me with much better storage capacity, escape routes and things like that. The only issue is that I have normal wall windows, and they face a block of flats. I've accepted this negative part with the decision that the benefits provided by that room out weigh the downside of slightly lower opsec, and easier outside access. Let's be fair, I'm going to be making a way to secure the windows better than most people. Maybe a small bar/grid system, or possibly even shutters that I can lock into place on the inside. The most important things for me are the increased space, access to the roof, and the ability to get in and out of the building faster. In a couple of months I'm going to be securing a climbing anchor point on our roof so that I can clip in a climbing rope and belay myself down to the street from the roof.
