RE: adjusting
I used to commute from Portsmouth to just inside the dreaded M25 everyday. That sucked. So I moved up there... that sucked to... too close to London, too many people, and traffic from hell. I was living in Epsom, which was voted top place to live in the UK while I was there. But I couldn't wait to get back to the South coast. So I am now happily living by the sea again, earning half what I did four years ago, but in a job I enjoy, and with colleagues who don't all drive convertible BMWs. And I'm all the happier for it... by a LOOONG way.
Getting knocked off my motorbike and having to have my skeleton rebuilt was one of the better things to have happened to me funnily enough. It sucked for a year, and then everything fell into place.
My wife used to commute from Portsmouth to Reading everyday for a BBC job... job was good but the commute wasn't worth it. She works 7 miles away now, and still earns way more than me... which doesn't take much.
So I'm all for downsizing, and working close to home. Definitely.
