SUK HT PROGRAMMING PROTOCOL (proposal)
Before launching into this , a short word about jargon: Sorry but I’ve played with radio so long that sometimes I use interchangeable jargon. For the sake of these discussions Waltie-Talkie , HT ( Handheld Transceiver), and handheld all mean the same thing. The ones covered by this proposal fall into 5 segments:
1. PMR446 Simple without privacy codes
2. PMR446 with CTCSS and DCS Privacy codes
3. VHF Hand Helds ( Sometimes includes Marine bands)
4. UHF Hand helds ( Sometimes include PMR446 band)
5. Dual Band (UHF+VHF + often PMR446&Marine bands)
The objective of this protocol is to create maximum interoperability between the 5 classes of equipment. Item 1 is least flexible in this respect, progressing to Item 5 which is most flexible.
Below and attached are MY poposed programming protocol for ALL types. It is laid out for 100 memory channel devices, which are now very common on the best low cost HTs that we’ve identified. Some of these units have the ability to write Names on the various memories and some only show memory number and frequency.
You may wonder why the Marine Emergency and SUK emergency contact frequencies are at the end of the channel list. Its because the channel selector is continuous on most radios. So clockwise from CH1 is CH2, but anti Clockwise from CH1 is CH99. This method keeps the most heavily used channels close at hand.
A big issue for operators of the latter radios, is remembering what each of the numeric memories contains. This is a real life problem that my group has had to deal with and we have progressively developed this proposed protocol over several years. By prescribing use of channels for set purposes we can just instruct to go to the channel number and everyone shows up on the same frequency and in the correct configuration.
AT THIS STAGE OF THE PROPOSAL I AM SEEKING FEEDBACK ON THE CHANNEL ALLOCATIONS. THEY WORK FOR ME AND MY GROUP USING A MIXED BAG OF ALL OF THE HTS LISTED. IF THERE ARE ADDITIONS OR OBJECTIONS WE NEED TO SORT THEM OUT NOW BEFORE ALLOCATING FREQUENCIES AND CODES TO THE PROTOCOL.
It is my vision that once the propcols are agreed that SUK’s download section will host pre-populated code sets that can be uploaded directly into the memory of HTs like the UV5r UV3r etc, so that the programming function is almost entirely automated, and that new users will be confident that their radios are configured correctly and are completely compatible with the Survivor Radio Protocol
How the programming protocol is used on each class of HT:
1. PMR446 Un-coded: No programming possible. Just use OPERATING PROTOCOLS that will be determined later in this sequence of threads.
2. PMR 446 with codes: These should be configured so that each channel to use codes as shown in Ch 11 (=Ch1 Coded) to Ch 18 (=Ch8 Coded)
3 & 4. VHF Single band HTs and UHF single band HTs:
HTs that are UHF only or VHF only are programmed with the frequencies they are capable of on the standard channels.
Looking at the list below, A VHF only radio would be programmed only on Channels 20 , 90,91,92,93 and any of the private group channels that are assigned to VHF
5.Dual Band HT’s get programmed for the whole 100 channels.
Within block 30 to 69 , the UV5r and UV3r class of radio is capable of complex operation such as split frequency and even cross band use. This is very useful for personal identification via a radio “hand-shake†More on this later.
