I assume then, that the Neanderthals didn't have much of a gatherer following? Reason being, hunting rabbits isn't hard, even for neanderthals. However, if you did eat just rabbit, that would cause you to die of malnutrition. Would that have played a factor? Maybe I'm just too shocked to believe anything is too dumb to throw a rock at a rabbit.
Evidence found in sites shows that Neanderthal used foraging techniques just as well as ourselves, and was quite capable of taking any animal, BUT the Neanderthal body required a lot of calories to keep it in good shape, and while they could get by on small game they could not live off it for extended periods of time without losing condition, they had to kill large game to thrive. Our leaner more
gracile frame can get by on slightly less calories, opening up a wider range of foods to survive on. We as a species were simply more adaptable to our environment and more varied in the way we used it.
