I do think with any kind of thrown object hunting and to a good extent bow hunting in hunter gatherer cultures and cultures that used such hunting techniques to supplement other foods was very much hunt by numbers.

In that, I mean I just do not see one or even two fellas going and throwing, more of it being at least 5-10 people at least doing the same thing at the same time, rather than going for outright kills, using the weapons to attack a single or couple of animals en masse.
You are quite correct in your thinking about the hunting techniques of our ancestors, and there are many examples of rock art that show hunters attacking animals en masse throwing as many projectiles as they can, and many pictures show animals hit by multiple atlatl darts, the lone hunter is a somewhat romantic notion as evidence shows it not to be the case at all.
