The trouble is i have children and no matter how many times i tell them not to shine light near windows its bound to happen when you dont want it to.

This is one reason why retreating to the inner part of the house makes more sense, to me at least,... its very difficult to control children normally, let alone after the shtf, when they will be bored/tired.

If need be we will take up the inner part of the house plan, and there are only two of us, its a lot easier to hang a small rug over a closed door that will seal all light, and yet is simply moved aside when you want to go through the door,.. remember that you will be doing very little after dark anyway
A major part of survival is invisibility.
