There is a reason why we have family groups.

Also .... there for most of the next 30 years, going to the lower 48 only occasionally to be with his family.

So he was not on his own without a break.
Bit like the old mountain men of the west, they came down at time to re-stock and trade.
But yes there will be exceptions. Unfortunately the only exceptions we have to reference to are with a society up and running. Not one in a post shtf situation.
OK who can tell but I would not risk it nor would I want it.
And as be pointed out else where by some who will go the lone wolf route, they would not let strangers in if they were in a group.
So another risk which post shtf could well end up in premature death.
BUT...each to his own.
