RE: Population increase in your area
Ahh, this scenario comes from what has happened in the past rather than out of the rabbit hole! It also addresses the fact that there has been some form of organized government operating, taking inventory and collecting taxes in GB through every crisis, plague, famine and war since William landed on your shores.

A scenario where the government has not collapsed, the social order has not dissolved into cannibalism, money is still present and worth something and the military still has fuel, guns and ammo and can enforce their will! Or perhaps it is a foreign government imposing its will on a conquered nation that chose surrender over extinction?

Perhaps the only thing that has happened is that London has taken a hit from a single nuke, and now everyone is waiting. (remember that "phony war" period just before Dunkirk?)

First, you must accept that there will be or has been a complete and thorough "assessment and evaluation" of your premises by TPTB. Any obvious preps or visible equipment they now know about and probably confiscated.

Guess what??? The shed in the back yard where you keep the "good stuff" is now a flat for 5 persons!

And the off site storage facility where you kept the extras in rented space has now been turned into public housing.

The neighbors might not know about your preps, but this new evacuee family is going to be right in the middle of your business right now and from now on. They will hear every word you speak and know every morsel you consume. They will smell the ramen noodle spices on your breath. And those kids are into everything!

Your chances of moving the preps or caching them might have been very limited. In WW2 the Evacuation proposal was debated and passed on one day and implemented on the next! People were on busses and moving into the suburbs and countryside on the afternoon of day 2.

The people will arrive with an official that hands you a list of the rules, requirements and regulations. And NO they are not simply suggestions! Failure to comply will result in YOU suddenly occupying a worse situation than you now face.

My first question on seeing them at the door would be as to the location of the feeding stations that would be needed to sustain the influx of people.

If rationing was in effect I would ask about the presence of their ration cards.

GB has a history of both of those activities also, along with provisions for some form of compensation for the efforts of the home owner.

Next, I would make provisions for getting out of the house as much as possible. It is going to be a crowded and noisy place. To the extent that movement is possible (you may be under curview or have check points or road blocks) make plans to preserve ones mental state by not being present. Remember that the spouse will be in the same situation. Your dwelling may become the place you go just to sleep and not to relax.

Your preps?? Well all good plans of mice and men sometimes go astray.

Of course you can still use the water butts, work the plot to stretch your rations, turn on the solar lights at night if that is allowed.

It does not have to be ALL BAD!!

As I stated in another thread, my late father-in-law was billeted in a private residence during the war. The lady of the house got each soldier's ration booklet and a bit extra for her efforts. They combined all the rations and ate reasonably well for the effort. The squaddies also brought home treats from the Red Cross on occasion, such as canned hams, butter, cheese and other staples. That is not counting the goodies they were known to pilfer from the company mess.

They also contributed blankets, toiletries and items that were not easily available to civilians, such as razor blades, soap and (believe it or not) military issue shotgun shells.

My FIL never forgot his "host family" and kept communication with them until his dying day. He visited them twice over the years after the war. It was a friendship that lasted nearly 50 years.
