I think that the success of this technique really will be dependant upon where you live and what the underlying geology is.

For example in this part of the country once you get down about 2 feet, you hit shale/shillet and there is no way that this technique is going to go through it, it would just shred the pipe to bits.

However in East Anglian and the South East, where the ground consists more of alluvium; sand and clay, then there is a much greater chance of it working, except in large parts of those areas the water table has been artificially lowered by water extraction to serve London and the South East, that you may find that you have to go so deep it becomes impractical.
