You are making snap judgments based on very few facts and the first one home does not necessarily win.

How do you know it is an EMP.

If it is EMP how wide is the affected area (check you vehicle radio for news, if it was off it should still work, as should your vehicle)

What is the time of day (I am not beginning a 20 mile walk 2 hours before the darkest dark night you have ever known)

I would stay at the farmers market for a while and find out what is actually going on.
