well rainmeter could serve that purpose well, you can have the time date, local news, weather and all sorts right on your desktop!....i used to even get a word of the day feed, essentially you can set up any rss feed to display, i used to have google news right there in whatever colour and size i wanted!...although this wouldnt fufill the void of specific information for prepping, it would serve to keep you upto date and such like, not to mention you could have a wallpaper that compliments your rainmeter setup, if you give me a list of information i'll see what i can rig up for you, im not too good at the rainmeter coding, but i know enough ...and i can make a pretty wallpaper, combine the 2 and im sure i can create a nice cohesive look thats useful as well as pretty
