For what its worth there IS a workable comprimise, that is survivalists and preppers living / residing in an agreed area. IE you all mutually agree the AOO you want to live in and dominate safely, so you all move within that area, thus you still maintain your own families independance, but you can easily join up with others for combined training, barn raisings, community projects, harvest time, roundup time or in response to a threat. thats why certain parts of Idaho and Exeter have high numbers of survivalist families living in a given area, same with the Amish , They live private seperate lives but come togther at harvest time or when there is trouble.

UK wise to my honest belief theres quite a few folks in the area around Exeter, another cluster just inland of Aberystwith, another group in the vicinity of an eco housinbg project near Nottingham, a few more in north wales and more near the CAT centre as well. Theres a colony of similar folks in western Scotland and quite a few in Northumberland.

i was having this very conversation with someone else-about Amish type living that is. i think this is probably how things will evolve post SHTF, people will live in an area and keep their own independence, working their own land and animals, but there will be others in the locality doing the same, and people will come together for barn building, harvesting, security and socialising. the Amish is a good model to follow, in an era of no electricity and no road fuel, using horses and ponies for transport and moving goods makes good sense.

Problem is parking them horse and traps.
Despite having my blue badge (which I was carrying for a joke), we had a run in with a Dorset traffic warden and the police.
It was obviously not my trap BUT I was being transported in it so using the blue badge was apparently legal.
Finally some nerd from the council offices over the road complained about the horse poo smell when he came to see what the fuss was about.
So we showed him the 1/2 full sack and shovel in the cart and asked if he would rather we stuck it in the dog mess bin.
He left.
Something we said I'm thinking.

Oddly enough my pet hate up to very recently was the herds of local gypos who cause much misery around here, ( the old respected and quite well liked English gypsies appear to be extinct now) they use pony and traps, horses and 2 wheeled sprung carts etc mainly for illegal trotting races on the local roads. But of late and after seeing diesel reach over £1.50 a litre I'm styarting to think of nags and casrts in a different light. As it is some locals are suggesting the schools using mini buses to ferry kids to and from home are now actually thinking about a horse drawn tram to do the school run.

ponies and traps would be a great way to get about AFTER TSHTF, i am not sure its a wise event before then, we keep seeing in the papers about collisions between horse riders and the local boy racers, only recently a horse was killed and the rider was hospitalised for a long time, mind you there are idiots in all walks of life, some of these horse riders just WONT pull in to let you by and i go quite slowly around horses, only recently we had to follow 3 horses for over a mile because they wouldnt pull off the road, so i can see how some of the drivers get annoyed, we used to see a trap and 2 shetland ponies on the roads around Somerset, if you want to see horses, traps and gear the place to go is Priddy in Somerset when the sheep/horse fair is on.

As I mentioned previously - I dont think a single large colony is the best idea , I've mentioned the 'wooden wheel' idea - a central hub with outlying prepper posts , harder to hit in one go , and easier to displace from , I'm not a great fan of a large number of survivors / preppers living together, near enough to help each other , yes , but not in one group.
At least not until after the S has well and truly HTF.

Size ? - Anything upwards of 40/50 people together WILL attract interest.

An armed force of 15 will over-run a group that size no problem if the right tactics are used , create shock and widespread confusion,and bobs your aunties brother.

Likewise a single large colony - it SHOUTS - 'attack here for useful goodies and supplies' , as time goes on it may be more viable , but within a year ? dont honestly know.

One thing worth thinking about - a single - well hidden sniper ,can command and dominate a very large area , and can pin down far superior forces very ,very easily.

This is a good thread. It’s a shame I came across it so late.
I am wondering why the emphasis is on going to an area of low population?

I would have thought that would be a good idea in Zombie scenario, but for slightly more likely scenarios (where the rest of the population don’t want to eat you) I would have thought the best place to be is in a good farming area, on the outskirts of an area of large urban area. No one notices you (like they don’t notice a donkey when stood near a brachiosaur) and great for scavenging etc.

Perhaps I have missed the point and you are thinking of a place to stay before the shit hits the fan. Or perhaps a scenario where society is still intact, but just totally fu..., um, fudged, so we want to opt out.

I love going to North Wales though. And every time I’m there (I go a lot) I muse about escaping there after disaster ‘X’. It just has that kind of feel to it. So I’d be easily talked around.

in my/our own case we prefer a low population area, i dont like people/sheeple at the best of times so after TSHTF want to keep as low profile as possible.
