RE: Solar Charger and Light
i know solar works, well kinda, when i had my iphone i used it a couple of time. It worked sometimes and then didnt at others. so have less faith in them. If on the other hand you have usb device like torch or other items this might be worth looking at! Ok its bloody expensive about 170 pounds but it cooks, heats, and is power http://biolitestove.com/homestove/overview/

On a usb cheat charge and a full flat battery mobile phone I manage 4 of 5 bar charge, 3 hours in the garden, I still have yet to do a solar only charge from both flat solar device and dead phone, this I would hope to get 5 mins after 3 hours, that is enough for an emergency call, it would be then worth packing in the kit.

RE: Solar Charger and Light
Hi W&C
I have ordered a couple of these, just for the internal battery they are worth the money.
My application is as backup power for the BOB. I don't see it as an emergency power generator. But once bugged out, my plan is to just leave the thing in the daylight trickle charging its internal battery, that would then be an emergency power source.
For a real emergency power source I came across this yesterday:

I've ordered a couple, one for the GHB and one to store away. I'll post here after I've played with themm a little. But at less than two quid delivered, I'm not expecting much!!!

HI JJ
this reads very well. I'm amazed that such an efficient burner has only just been invented, and a little skeptical in this respect. I am always wary of marketing hyperbole!
If you get one, please can you do a write up as if it works as described it'd be a brillian piece of kit to have in a BOL/refuge.

Once again this sort of little hand wound charger is limited in the amount of power it can produce. Practically you just can't turn the handle for long enough to get much charging done. You might just be able to get enough charge to fire off a quick text on a phone.

I believe they say the Home stove is not available in the west, it's for the developing world only (at this time).
There is a separate thread discussing this type of stove.

RE: Solar Charger and Light
thanks very much for putting this up W&C. I will be getting at least one to have precharged in the car for when I really need to make a call but am low battery.
Also I can see a use in a grid down situation for charging USB devices such as my prepping kindle. I don't mind having one of these sat in the sun for a week slowly charging to full so I can have another couple of weeks charge in my kindle.
