watch out countryside...
Heres a quote from the daily mail article ferom a guy who lives in new york and has had enough...
'It's dirty, and it's getting a little crazy down there,' said Michael Tomeo, who boarded a bus to Philadelphia with his four-year-old son. 'It just feels like you wouldn't want to be out at night. Everything's pitch dark. I'm tired of it, big-time".
America's huge, their country and rural areas could easily absorb an influx of city dwellers fleeing the cities.
Would our's be able too?
I think not.
Now imagine something similar happening to the u.k's coastal areas devastating them...
Would you be ready for the influx??
They may well aim for other cities. because that's what they're used to, but what if they don't?
What if they come to the countryside??
I tried to be normal once.... Worst two minutes of my life...

without somewhere to go, without bricks and mortar around them, they will NOT survive the first cold, damp winter..even in the mild south west it gets perishing!!

RE: watch out countryside...
If people leave the cities, they'll move together into a community area. Then that will become appealing, and more will move in. That area will need shops, facilities, and the alike. Next thing you know....Scythe-Ville has been established haha.
People won't move away from cities for 3 reasons.
1. Jobs. We need money for food (apparently) and people won't be able to leave the city for jobs elsewhere.
2. Knowledge. People are scared of 'the wild' if they're city people.
3. Prestige. It's where the young cool people all want to live. So we should be safe from them.

i agree, there are NO jobs in the countryside, farms around here are one man bands or at least family run, any job in town will be minimum wage part time thats when there is a vacancy which isnt very often. city people are scared of the country, yes, after all their food comes from a supermarket not the countryside..right? they cant abide church bells, cockerels crowing, no street lights and cows "dumping" in a field. and your right Scythe "cool" young people wouldnt be seen "dead" in the countryside..its full of muck and mud.

RE: watch out countryside...
You're right there NR.
People have a fight or flight response, right? WRONG!!! They also have a third response. Freeze in place! Oh wait, maybe a 4th one. Denial. Like that ship that was taking on water, and the people in the dining hall even as the water was lapping around their feet, they sat there and kept eating their meals!!!
People either respond or they shut down. They can shut down both mentally or physically. If someone shuts down mentally, they'll just get on as if nothing is going on.
That is another reason the vast majority of people won't leave a city. They'll assume that everything is okay, or it was a 1 off occurrence and it will never happen again, so they can stay there and be safe!
Aren't people crazy?!?!?!?

most city people will stay where they are, why should they flee-its their home..right? even if they DO think about it they will leave it until its too late( no food in the shops, no fuel in the filling stations, power off, toilets backing up), most people will not even acknowledge there IS a problem until its too late.
another thing, if its this time of year and with the weather we've just had, travelling is not going to be easy, even if they've got a vehicle and fuel, the ground is absolutely saturated, the roads are wet, pools of water are everywhere, the first hint of even a bit of cold and those some roads and fields are going to turn into skating rinks!
