irradiated food
i watched Jamie and jimmy's food fight last night , on it jimmy vacuum packed several meals and had then irradiated and buried them in a time capsule , the claim is that they will last for ever in perfect condition making it obne of the best ways of storing fresh foods and ready meals !
that set me thinking , if the claim is true why aren't the army's mre ration packs irradiated ? instead of lasting up to 25 years if correctly stored the would last indefinitely ! which would make it an ideal preppers food surely?
so i did a search and found this http://uw-food-irradiation.engr.wisc.edu/Facts.html
so if it was widely available would you add it to your preps or stray well clear of it , and can it really last forever?

RE: irradiated food
Thats an interestion piece, its not something I much about,... its certainl worth looking out the green symbol
I dont suppose the Army use them yet as they probably have years of rations left that they need to use up first
Bliemy,..its still early,..I hope people cant read that bad grammer/spelling

RE: irradiated food
Interesting article. It seems that it doesn't kill bacteria so your cooking needs to do that. So I suspect that not all food irradiated will last forever. Just those that are cooked, sealed and then irradiated which must cover almost everthing we need with nitrogen or argon gas getting the rest.
Certainly something worth looking into.

RE: irradiated food
I read somewhere that iradiated food was a cause of cancer. I will put in a search to see if I can verify this. Kenneth Eames.

RE: irradiated food
I don't see how irradiated food can lead to cancer so I'll be interested in reading that report about cancer. Irradiation is a standard method of extending the shelf life on many foods.
