what about when the Internet goes off?

RE: what about when the Internet goes off?
i'm not too bother if the internet went off, I have printed off ALL the prepper related stuff I have ever come across and we both have a great library of books both prepper, permaculture, gardening and so forth, I don't believe in having all my info on the computer just in case this event did actually happen...it would all be lost if I did that, besides i'm old fashioned and I actually PREFER the printed word.
Some people that prefer to be alone arent anti-social they just have no time for drama, stupidity and false people.

I seem to recall from my distant past, something called "packet radio".
Essentially this appeared to be blocks of 128 byte data in an "envelope"

It wouldn't be beyond the bounds of imagination to encapsulate TCP/IP packets and transmit them. I am not sure of the speeds you might get on SSB but you would at least have a rudimentary net.

Talking about communications .............

Paddy goes up to Seamus and sees him talking to an empty envelope.
"What you doing you daft beggar?"
"It's voicemail innit!"

Wow, good memory RS.....I'm guessing you have an IT background of some sort.

Yest Packet radio does exist. Its not something I've played with but it could create a fairly resiliant communications system if sufficient numbers of stations participate.

I was thinking PSK31 (PSK= Phase Shift Keying) using SSB capable transceivers.

I have to say when our router dies it feels my wrath. i spend an unhealthy amount of time on the net through gaming, the forum or youtube. If they did kill itim sure they would feel backlash and as i understand it there are some very skilled computer people out there who could hack in and cause trouble for them
It's not the end of the world, but you can see it from here

Truthfully I would be lost but I do take written notes and draw diagrams for reference from a lot of Wed site so I do have back ups.

My Lord are none here older than 21?

I did not have internet access until 2003 and got by just fine. Had a fine career, a good home, raised a family and got two advanced degrees before the "internet" was up and running.

We still have these buildings called libraries that are filled with information jotted down in things called books.

I have a small version of this in my own home. I have shelves filled with pages of writing, bound up between covers, about subjects I feel are important and might be needed if the thing we call the indispensable internet should not be available.

But what would I do if the internet went down?

Probably go outside and get something done!

The internet is handy while it is there. When it is gone a great many other, more important things, will also be gone and it will not be the first thing we think about when we think back to the good old days.

Yes - before my current incarnation, I used to design comms networks including specialising in X.25 and TCP/IP. Had to problem solve packets using a scope. Gave it all up when I reached 45 and changed direction.

Leaving aside lone wolves, packet radio could provide a rudimentary comms network.

You are a good kind og lady to hab=ve on the team with your experience RS.

When we get enough people actively prepping radio coms, maybe we can collaborate to see how a packet system could be set up?

Possibly. Of more importance to me at the moment is to try and
pull together an AM or FM broadcast station. (Some may call it pirate)

Something to transmit local information for about 10 miles would be cool.

Since the loss of analogue TV, a pirate TV station is now out of the question I think
but think through the opportunities of a small 12v transmit station.

This idea intrigues me more than the internet frankly.
