Just had an odd thought, how long would you want to survive a really bad event? If an event went on for 3, 4, 5, 10 years, would you want to survive that long?

We prepare so that we can continue to have a quality life. If it's a living hell then we've got it wrong. Even if I wasn't enjoying it myself, I'd still want to be around to help my family for as long as possible.
