RE: Horses
The Mongols in the past and the modern Mongolians of today both rely heavily on the horse.
They drink their milk and also make alcohol by fermenting it.

Am not sure if horses in our part of the world produce the same sort of milk but I would guess that it is pretty much the same.
A group that has enough horses will be in a greatly advantaged position.
Transport, haulage, friendship, food and fertiliser amongst other things.
And I would support having dogs too.

RE: Horses
Riding horses are not much good for pulling anything, unless they've been trained to do both, which would be highly unlikely. riding horses are generally too highly strung, see a flapping bit of plastic in the hedge and they take off, seen it several times aroung here. now WORKING horses are a different breed altogether, much more placid. sometimes you can get a pony which has been trained to pull a small cart, i have seen a few advertised in equine magazines over the last couple of years.

RE: Horses
only horse I would consider is one that could earn its keep.
pull out those stubborn tree roots.
help plow my small field.
pull a cart full of goods.
im in no rush to get anywhere so a plain riding horse would be no use to me at all.
better if it can pull a pony trap like the amish horses.
