Great little video here of DR Bob aka "atlatl bob" explaining the physics behind the atlatl. They also make one from natural materials.

AS well as making another blowpipe this year, I am going to make another atlatl, though this time I won't use it down at the local archery club on their nice targets as they tend to get a bit miffedUndecided

Really surprised that more people do not mention or make Dutch Arrows. Been making these since I was really young, every so often I will make one but it is just getting the time to get into the open space with them, I can throw them quite far.

Here is a vid.

We call them French arrows round here and you can throw them miles lol, they work a bit like the dart used with an atlatl, use a long arrow so it bends when you throw it, a classic I tottaly forgot about theseBig Grin nice one

I do think with any kind of thrown object hunting and to a good extent bow hunting in hunter gatherer cultures and cultures that used such hunting techniques to supplement other foods was very much hunt by numbers.

In that, I mean I just do not see one or even two fellas going and throwing, more of it being at least 5-10 people at least doing the same thing at the same time, rather than going for outright kills, using the weapons to attack a single or couple of animals en masse.

You are quite correct in your thinking about the hunting techniques of our ancestors, and there are many examples of rock art that show hunters attacking animals en masse throwing as many projectiles as they can, and many pictures show animals hit by multiple atlatl darts, the lone hunter is a somewhat romantic notion as evidence shows it not to be the case at all.
