Well, thanks for all the advice and kind remarks. I'm still staggering around, but have followed some of the advice with hopeful results.

The suggestion of hand warmers instead of those expensive heat up pads was brilliant (and I also get to have warm hands in chilly weather!). I did try whining pitifully in hope that the OH would be sympathetic, but he is one of those onward and upward types, so no joy there. He was happy to suggest massaging me with some pain-killing gel, but as I suspect that would lead to something else, he's out of luck! The shot of alcohol was the winner though. Cheers!
