Perhaps if people see you as someone in charge, prepared and with authority you would be able to organize them into a coherent community until things are fixed rather than bands of looters and people looking out for themselves. That those who wish to get ahead of everyone else would either be in the minority or see your community as the best solution.

given the attitude of most prevalent these days, there will be no community cohesion post SHTF, most "have nots" will try to take from the "haves", if you don't trust your neighbours (we don't) then either keep a VERY low profile or Bug Out at the first sign of trouble.
