My experience has been that the 34%, or whatever other number do not vote, simply do not give a crap!

It is not a superior attitude or a political statement, it is general apathy.

My experience has also been that you would not want them making decisions for your political system anyway.

We recently had the possibility of mandatory voting presented by our omnipotent leader. He is quite sure if he can get all the uncaring scum out to the poles he can change the world.

Anyone with a brain would prefer they remain at home on election day.

Okay MB turn it on its head....only 34% turn up for the gig.... do you think this would strengthen or weaken any political argument or colour of any flag or rosette ...the point i was alluding to was any regime needs our participation for a successful outcome, or is this an illusion, even scum as you put it have the same rights as you or me...democracy is democracy you can not cut bits out you want to suit your needs when the whim takes you...your founding fathers Knew this..... All any American or come to that any person belonging to a true democracy should be able to stand up for those hard fought rights without fear and say ....hold on a minute you cannot just undo, or change that ....and be held to account .....just as they would hold you and rightly so in a true democracy, anything less will just not cut it, if changing the the undies every five years is supposed to bring with it change for the betterment of all explain to me why? is it there is no change at all ...a simple enough question, if you roll out the crap you inherited by the previous party as an excuse for all ills and an explanation of the shit you now find yourself in....is the give us another chance ...another five years we will make it all disappear ....let me share with you my life experience ( completely free of charge ) it does NOT work and moreover it never will ....let me share with you something else ( its by design )

Apathy gets my vote!
If there had not been so much promotion of this event then I feel that the turnout would have been even lower giving less credence to the result.

I have a very different opinion of "democracy" and voting.

I do not believe citizenship automatically guarantees voting privileges.

It did not in the past and most of the present problems can be traced to the point when TPTB began allowing anyone with breath in their body to vote. They sold those votes, trading entitlements for power in both your system and mine.

I believe in literacy requirements and dedication to the nation based on service. I also believe that no one receiving benefits, except for disability or retirement, should have the vote. I also go so far as to say there should be a property ownership requirement.

I know that is not a popular opinion and will grate on the socialist mindset like fingernails on the chalk board, but it is the one I have based on the history of our systems, and those that have gone before.

Perpetuation of a system...any system ...that is not fit for purpose and is corrupt does not denote a successful one, if we go back in time for the conception of any system ...these building blocks were fought for and earned through the efforts and blood of past times they usually denote a struggle , a point of reference in history ...usually because people raise up and say...hold on..this is not fair ...the solid foundation that once existed is manipulated and over time undermined to suit the few and not the whole, so instead of steady progress ...decline is the result....history repeating itself....people ordinary people do not have to be told things are great ! everything is fine, we have turned to corner , the promised land is just a few steps away, when the same people attend a food bank,or pick up a part time job with zero hours because there is nothing else..cannot pay their way...loose their home...and credit rating......a normal person would ....and do...think this is a load of bollocks "if things are so good why is my life full of shit why? am i not feeling all this love" have i done something wrong? why am i dealing with this bucket full of crap i find myself in ? .....a tipping point is reached...time for a new history defining moment , a reset , thing is MB its not just your country or mine ...its global ...all that needs to be addressed is the WHY we have arrived here ..what went wrong ? to instigate such a mess...who are responsible ...then fix it ....is progression really that hard a goal to achieve.....have a listen IMAGINE John Lennon.

I voted for a party that isn't going to do me any favours, but they do offer some form of stability , the system is fecked and we will get to a point further up the track where it will become untenable then maybe financial collapse/revolution or given the political demographic possibly even civil war but I think this is a while away , I have two kids about to go university , I'm right on the brink of higher rate tax , I expect to have my pension arrangements messed with/stolen so it was with a heavy heart that I put that x next to the conservative candidate but I feel vindicated if only to prolong normal life fore a while.

The simple truth......kicking cans down the road ...never solves any problem....it just magnifies inflates the problem that,s had a cloak set around it....EG....QE sooner rather than later someone has the stump up...it might not you ....but your kids will....in short we the people will pay and pay big.....Fear and reward....when your born .....a smack on your arse demands a response..... the moment you oblige....you get a reward by means of a warm loving embrace of your mother....fast forward a few years.....you are now finding your feat .....NO i said ! that,s very naughty ! ...at this point you are shunned of attention....two years later....NO i said ....followed by a gust of air and another smack on your arse....and something nonsensical is verbally is transmitted to you " DO YOU WANT SOME MORE OF THAT ? is your responce going to be " oh yes please mummy i really enjoyed that ! i would love some more " NOOOoooooo Fear trip...to reinforce the point the added addition to this riveting intercourse is the Reminder option ...the threat...."YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY"...you nod... But the turn out for voting in this election was the highest level of turn out in nearly 20 years.

There will always be those that are away from home working, have been delayed on the way home from work, may be away on holiday (it was a 4 day week and plenty of people were down here in the SW on Holiday) etc etc, so you are never going to get everyone voting.

But I'd be interested to know how many simply chose not to vote, rather than those who were unable to vote for one reason or another.

If one is truly interested in how the country is run and who runs it arrangements can be made to vote if one choses to so do.
Given the very long lead in to this election there would have been little or no excuse not to vote because of holidays etc etc.
Therefore I would suggest that a very large proportion of the 34% comes under the heading of apathy.
At least we have a choice in this country and voting is not yet compulsory.
