If you use thermite to get into a safe you may find the entire contents are charred remains. Controlling the stream of spewing, well, lava, for want of another word sounds easy in principle, but in practice it's bounces and flows all over the place. Best left well alone unless you're sabotaging something. Like Mort says, workshops have lots of tools that'll be useful.

Magnesium is best for lighting thermite too. Ribbon is good fun.
You should have powered aluminium anyway, how else do you make your flash powder?? LOTS of fun with that stuff. Just measure your fuses and make sure you've got time to move. Chinese fuse definitely doesn't always follow the 1cm 1 second rule.....
