Here's a kit for a 40m radio that is capable of 200 mile range using Single Side Band (SSB) speech mode.

200 mile range NVIS using fixed 20metre long antenna

It'll take some time to solder the kit together, which will be a good education in itself.

Price around £ 90 plus delivery and tax
