There's zero chance of Russia starting a nuclear war ... unless it thinks the west is going to start one, and then it won't hesitate to destroy the west ... but only what is necessary to obliterate the military. Which will include anything including electricity which aids the military.

As for western "leaders" ... they are bonkers and subject to delusional group think ... and the Russians see that delusion, and they see they are being crazy, so they are very close to pressing the button.

Given the fact that the west is led by delusional nutters who seem to have fallen for every con from climate to covid, I'd say there is a high chance of nuclear war.

I wouldn't say there is a zero chance of Russia starting one but I believe it is small. More chance of the US starting it imo.

Russia has thousands of nukes. It will take 5 to wipe out the UK.

Totally agree BP , I wonder how the Americans really view the current president ? There is no way he runs the show …..most powerful man on the planet ? The most dangerous man fits a better description ! It begs the question who runs America ? Who pulls the strings ? .

Even five of the biggest nukes ever conceived (100mt) would not wipe out the UK. Nukes have a relatively small "total kill" zone which is big enough to wipe out many cities. But Russia is not going to target cities. Instead it will target strategic military assets, reducing the West's ability to fire back. Most of those are well away from cities, so they are not in "total kill" zone.

Fallout also affects a massive area, but it's a concentrated zone downwind of the blast (downwind at the height of the Mushroom cloud, not ground level). If you are in the middle of one of those fallout zones, you're dead unless you get into a very good nuclear bunker with at least 1m of earth around it. But again, the area affected is relatively small. Vast numbers of people in the UK, want see any impact ... except the total cessation of normal life.

My current thinking, is that following a series of exchanges, that the US and UK will have no effective government, emergency services, health service or law enforcement for the first month. After about a month, very sporadic "help" might start arriving, but only a fraction of what is needed, because the rest of the world will have more than enough problems of its own. "Camps" will be set up, which the gullible people displaced from fallout zones will go to in the expectation that "someone else will do something", but realistically, there will be almost no help and they will be worse than the worst third world famine camps and quickly people will be locked in.

However, in rural areas that are unaffected by fallout, things could start looking as "normal" as you get when they are cut off by snow. But, cities will be a disaster area. There will be almost no food getting in.

As for areas with fallout ... no help at all. Anyone who stays in one is certain to die.

In Russia, they would be locked up in a mental hospital, in the UK the delusional nutters are not just advising government, they are in government.

With that kind of delusion in the west, it's not hard to see why the Russians have their finger over the nuclear button.

a month? heck most non preppers would be dead or dying within that time frame.
no food for 3 weeks, no water for 3 days, no health services.
