I think maybe your cheap and mine may be slightly different... I've got two teenage boys and a girl NOTHINGS cheap with them...  I'm the original poor prepper... 
I tried to be normal once.... Worst two minutes of my life...

Does anyone know if there are better antennas that will fit the Baofeng uv-r5?

It's pretty easy to tap as well. Just add another bit of string with a yogurt pot on, and you're in. Also, it's easy to cut the line......literally. It's not the most mobile system either. Even a 4meter ariel/antenna/coat-hanger-thing is more mobile and subtle. But that's all besides the point!!! ............................................Yep, The UV5rs can be had from £30.00 The antenna supplied with the radio is adequate and is tuned for the entire transmit capability of the radio, so just using this is the safest way to go........................................................ In that case I might just leave it as it is for now,... with the option of trying another at a later date,... thanks
